Stone Wisdom: The traditional birthstone for June is the pearl. Of course, pearl is not a "stone" in the sense of being a rock formed in the crust of the earth, but rather a hardened secretion produced by shelled water animals called mollusks. When a small irritant, usually a piece of sand, becomes trapped in the mollusk's soft tissues, the animal secretes a substance called nacre (also called "mother of pearl") which surrounds the irritant. The nacre builds up, layer by layer, producing a smooth, hardened pearl. The name Onyx is derived from the Greek term, onux, meaning fingernail. This comes from a Greek tale of Venus and Eros. While Venus slept, Eros cut her fingernails and left the clippings all over the ground. Because no part of a god could die, the clippings were turned into stone, thus becoming onyx. In Greek times, almost all colors of chalcedony, from gray-white to black and all the colors in-between, were called Onyx. Later the term was used only to describe the darker varieties. The artificial coloring of onyx dates back over 2000 years ago in Arikamedu, a region of India.
